Some thrillers give you the answer before you have even settled into the story. The best ones make you question every character, follow every clue and keep guessing until the final scene. Malayalam cinema has once again embraced that tension in 2026, delivering stories filled with mystery, investigations, family secrets, betrayal and unexpected turns.

What makes these films interesting is the variety. Some lean into grounded police investigations, while others explore darker mysteries, high-stakes conspiracies and crime through a more unusual lens. A few are built around familiar faces and established worlds, while others take a fresh route with unpredictable characters and situations.
I have selected and ranked the 7 best Malayalam thriller movies 2026 by considering their storytelling, performances, suspense factor, audience response and overall impact. If you enjoy films that keep your mind working long after the credits roll, this list is a good place to start.
7. Patriot
What happens when the technology designed to watch ordinary people becomes a weapon in the hands of those in power? That question forms the core of Patriot, Mahesh Narayanan’s ambitious Malayalam spy thriller.
Starring Mammootty as Dr. Daniel James, Mohanlal as Col. Rahim Naik and Kunchacko Boban as Michael Devassy, the film follows covert operatives who uncover a surveillance conspiracy that grows into a national security crisis. Fahadh Faasil, Nayanthara and Revathy are also part of the ensemble cast. The film was released in theatres on May 1, 2026, and is currently available to stream on ZEE5.
Patriot has the scale, star power and technical ambition of a major event film. Its surveillance-and-power storyline gives the thriller a contemporary edge, while Mammootty and Mohanlal bring the kind of screen presence that makes even a quiet exchange feel important. Critics praised its performances, visuals and serious subject, though some felt the film’s lengthy runtime and uneven dramatic momentum held it back.
6. Valathu Vashathe Kallan
A Jeethu Joseph crime thriller naturally comes with a certain expectation. There is usually a mystery to unravel, a character hiding something and a story that slowly reveals the truth behind what first appears to be a simple case. Valathu Vashathe Kallan plays in that familiar territory, with Biju Menon leading the investigation.
The film stars Biju Menon as Circle Inspector Antony Xavier, with Joju George, Lena, Niranjana Anoop, also appearing in important roles. Released in theatres on January 30, 2026, the Malayalam crime thriller follows an investigation that gradually uncovers hidden connections and buried secrets. The film is currently available to stream on Amazon Prime Video and Lionsgate Play in India.
The biggest strength of Valathu Vashathe Kallan is its central mystery and the performances at its core. Biju Menon brings a grounded quality to the investigation, while Joju George adds another layer of intensity to the film’s dramatic world. The story also moves beyond a straightforward crime case by exploring family relationships, parenting and the secrets people try to keep hidden.
Best for: Viewers who enjoy character-driven Malayalam crime mysteries with a slower, more dramatic approach.

5. I, Nobody
An ordinary government employee, a serious crime and a system that refuses to believe him—I, Nobody builds its thriller around the terrifying idea of how quickly a normal life can collapse.
Directed by Nissam Basheer, the film stars Prithviraj Sukumaran as Rajeevan, with Parvathy Thiruvothu, Vijayaraghavan, Ashokan in important roles. The story follows Rajeevan, a husband and father whose life takes a dangerous turn after he witnesses something he was never meant to see. He soon finds himself connected to a serious crime, branded a troublemaker and forced to protect his family while facing a system that seems determined to turn against him.
Released in theatres on July 9, 2026, I, Nobody is a 2-hour-48-minute Malayalam action-crime thriller. The film is currently not available on major OTT platforms in India. while the film has received a mixed critical response, with praise for its performances, technical work and strong opening stretch.
The film’s biggest strength is its central situation. Rajeevan is not introduced as a larger-than-life action hero; he is an ordinary man pushed into an extraordinary crisis. That gives the early portions of the film a strong sense of urgency. Prithviraj carries the emotional weight of the role well, while Hakkim Shah has also been singled out for a strong performance.
Best for: Viewers who enjoy grounded crime stories, survival tension and thrillers built around an ordinary man caught in an extraordinary situation.
4. Drishyam 3
Some film franchises become popular. A few become part of popular culture. The Drishyam series belongs to the second category, and that makes every new chapter carry a much heavier expectation.
Directed and written by Jeethu Joseph, Drishyam 3 brings back Mohanlal as Georgekutty, alongside Meena, Ansiba Hassan and Esther Anil. Set four-and-a-half years after the events of the previous film, the story continues to follow Georgekutty and his family as the consequences of the past continue to shape their lives. The Malayalam crime mystery thriller was released in theatres on May 21, 2026, and is now available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.

For me, Drishyam 3 is a film that is impossible to watch like a regular thriller. The moment Georgekutty appears, you automatically start looking for the next move. That is the franchise’s biggest advantage—and its biggest challenge. While the third chapter may not deliver the same shock of the original, the return of these characters, the tension surrounding their past and Mohanlal’s performance still make it an important Malayalam crime thriller of 2026.
Best for: Fans of the Drishyam franchise and viewers who enjoy slow-burning crime mysteries built around secrets, paranoia and psychological tension.
3. Dridam
A police station, a disturbing discovery and a murder case that refuses to follow a simple path—Dridam takes a familiar investigative setup and builds its tension around the pressure of solving a case before time runs out.
Directed by Martin Joseph, the film stars Shane Nigam in the lead role, with Mathew Varghese, Krishna Prabha, Dinesh Prabhakar and Prasant Murali also appearing in important roles. The story begins when human remains are discovered at a police station, forcing the investigating officer to unravel a murder mystery within a limited timeframe. Released in 8 May 2026, Dridam is currently available to stream on Jiohotstar.
I enjoy crime thrillers that trust the investigation to carry the story, and Dridam largely works because of that approach. It may not be the loudest film on this list, but the central mystery and police-procedural setup give it a satisfying sense of purpose. For viewers who prefer a proper murder investigation over a star-driven spectacle, this is one of the strongest picks in the 2026 Malayalam thriller lineup.

2. Bharathanatyam 2: Mohiniyattam
The first Bharathanatyam was built around quirky humour. Its sequel takes that familiar world into much darker territory, and that unexpected shift is exactly what makes Bharathanatyam 2: Mohiniyattam such a fun addition to this list.
Directed by Krishnadas Murali, the film stars Saiju Kurup, Suraj Venjaramoodu and Jagadish in key roles, alongside Vinay Forrt, Divya M. Nair, Kalaranjini and several others. The story follows a family travelling to settle affairs involving their late father’s second family. But when secrets from the past resurface and an unexpected crime changes everything, the family is pushed into a desperate cover-up. The Malayalam dark-comedy crime thriller was released in April 2026 and is currently streaming on Netflix.
The biggest advantage of Mohiniyattam is that it understands the value of tonal contrast. The film can be funny in one moment and deeply uncomfortable in the next, creating a crime story that never feels like a routine investigation. The family dynamic adds another layer to the chaos, as every decision brings new pressure and raises the stakes.
I genuinely like the fact that Bharathanatyam 2: Mohiniyattam does not try to become a conventional crime thriller. Its biggest charm comes from the awkward situations, morally complicated characters and the way ordinary family problems slowly turn into a much bigger mess.
Best for: Viewers who enjoy dark comedy, quirky characters and crime stories that take an unpredictable turn.
1. Sambhavam Adhyayam Onnu
Honestly, I haven’t watched a better thriller than Sambhavam Adhyayam Onnu in 2026 so far. It is the kind of film that stays with you long after the credits roll, leaving you to connect the clues, question what you have just seen and think about its strange mystery even after the story ends.
Set against the eerie backdrop of the Velloorkkatt forest near the Kerala–Tamil Nadu border, the film follows three Kerala Police officers who enter the mysterious forest while searching for a missing police officer. What begins as a rescue mission soon takes a far stranger turn as they encounter unexplained time-related phenomena and secrets hidden within the forest.
Written and directed by Jithu Satheesan Mangalathu, the film stars Askar Ali, Vineeth Kumar, Sidharth Bharathan, Assim Jamal, Neethu Krishna and Senthil Krishna. Released on March 6, 2026, the 129-minute Malayalam psychological thriller is now streaming on JioHotstar.
Why It Ranks at #1
The biggest reason Sambhavam Adhyayam Onnu takes the top spot is its ambition. Instead of following a familiar murder-investigation formula, the film combines police mystery, psychological thriller elements, a forest setting and a time-loop concept into something far more experimental. Its atmosphere does a lot of the heavy lifting, with the forest becoming almost as important to the story as the characters themselves.
